Lindsay Hassett

Leader, Tactician, Australian Cricketer

Arthur Lindsay Hassett MBE (28 August 1913 – 16 June 1993), or Lindsay Hassett as he preferred to be known, was an elegant middle-order batsman who represented Victoria and Australia. Hassett amassed 6,825 runs for Victoria at an average of 63 and was captain for 40 of his 73 games.

He also played 43 Tests for Australia, scoring 3,073 runs at an average of 46, including 10 masterful centuries. He succeeded Bradman as captain of Australia in 1948 and built an enviable record with 14 wins from 24 matches.

Hassett’s leadership was intrinsic to the success of the team, which helped to re-establish the game in England, India and Australia in the aftermath of the war.

A gifted leader of men, a shrewd tactician and a man of great character and integrity, Hassett served Victorian and Australian cricket for over half a century as a player, captain and later as one of the ABC’s most respected Test Cricket commentators.
